Jaisalmer as a Travel Destination
The name Jaisalmer evokes a feeling of
a distant place somewhere in the unknown lands. The distance between you and
Jaisalmer is only a psychological barrier that will simply melt with a mouse
click. Meet people that are vibrant, full of life and resilient in the face
of adversity. Jaisalmer is a city that sits on the edge of the Thar desert
and yet what you get to see is the epitome of frolicsome lives that simply
refuses to go away. Being tucked away at a distance has its advantages too,
as shown by this city that still retains its medieval cultural charm that
has still not been touched by westernizing influences sweeping their way in
through other so called well connected cities. As a discerning traveler,
you'll get innumerous moments that'll enthrall you no end, for example,
you'll travel back in time when you'll come to know that the place once fell
on the land trade route and thrived on the taxes levied on the businessmen
who passed through this route.
Although it might sound a bit far
fetched, but take our word for it ... you are going to enjoy even that long
drive through the desertscape that was so daunting only a few days ago ...
and when the city appears suddenly out of nowhere, you're going to savour
every moment of it. Now it's the turn of historic monuments to hold your
attention. Visit the Sonar Fort and various beautiful Havelis to get a taste
of it. Then there are the desert festival and Nagaur Festival you can
schedule your vacations around. The mansions of the traders are a major
attraction here in this part of the world (Surprised? ... Don't ... we are
going to tell you the reason.) As we have already mentioned, the city once
fell on the land trade route and the major part of the income of the royalty
came from the traders passing through the route. Now with the passage of
time the traders themselves grew so powerful that the palaces built by the
royalty did not match up to the mansions of the traders. Pass through the
streets caught in a time warp where you seem to be walking in that age.
Visit the Sonar Fort, Patwon ki Haveli, Salim Singh ki Haveli to experience
what you just read in the preceding sentences. Then there is Desert National
Park which is a protected reserve. Here you can see the Indian Gazelle,
eagle and many other attractive birds and animals. The famous SAM, the
shifting sand dunes also fall within the same park.
- Try camel safari for a change where you can go for days altogether
and you come back with fond memories ... or ... or, if you want to avoid
that, try elephant safaris. Believe us, you'd feel as if you are part of
royalty.
- Shop for bedspreads, table cloths, clothes with mirror work and
embroideries. We have listed only a few things to keep you interested.
As you go along, you'll find more items that'll keep you busy.
- Visit the Ghadisar which was once the source of water for the city
or go to see the Amar Sagar, a lake which is usually dry during summer.
Another excursion worth going to is SAM, the shifting sand dunes. The
famous desert festival is also held here.
- You must visit the Desert National Park whether you are with or
without children because you are going to enjoy the landscapes as much
as the things over it.
- We've mentioned Jaisalmer Fort late in this section because we
believe that even otherwise you are not going to miss the historic
monument for anything. In case you forgot, we've reminded you again.
- The oldest and one of the most beautiful Jain Temples, Parswanath
Temple, is a must visit even if you are not a Jain. Just admire the
beauty of the temple and the walls carved with different models of
living beings.
