Jodhpur - A Travel Destination
Jodhpur is a city that was born in the
lap of Thar Desert when Rao Jodha, the ruler of royalty of Marwar, took it
upon himself to establish the city but that was not all as it took hundred
years to consolidate it as a state. Now it is the second largest city of
Rajasthan and is also known as the blue city as it became a norm during the
medieval times to paint the exteriors of buildings with blue colour. That,
just like the pink city Jaipur, is a factor when it comes to deciding on a
possible tourism destination for your vacation. The forts and palaces of
Jodhpur, also known for its Marwar Festival, are second to none.
Your vacations here will be a
memorable experience what with imposing landmarks existing amidst tales of
valour and courage. By this we do not mean that modern buildings are not
worth a visit. The aim is to create an unforgettable vacation experience for
you. Although the place is situated amidst sand dunes and unfriendly
vegetation, yet the place is blessed with immense vacation possibilities.
Visit Mehrangarh Fort to experience the sheer magnitude of the scale
on which it was conceived. The palaces in the fort add to its grandiosity
whereas the elevations of the fort provide an overwhelming view of the city
as well as that of the canons that have been preserved for the benefit of
the tourists. The Osiyan Temple, an antiquated Jain temple is
situated, as the name suggests, in the Osiyan village which is only at the
distance of 60 km from the city of Jodhpur. Next in our list is the majestic
Umaid Bhawan Palace. It is one of the most commanding and recent
additions to the long list of tourist attractions. One of the most striking
contrasts of this towering structure is the story of its construction as it
was built as a famine relief project for the local people with the purpose
of providing employment for them. Since it is built with Chittar sandstone,
hence it is also referred to as Chitra Palace by the local populace. It has
now been converted into a heritage hotel, so even you can now get a chance
to stay in a palace a la royals. Never miss the architectural landmark of
Jaswant Thada, an intricately carved white marble structure that are
thin so much so that they sort of glow when the sun rays fall over it. While
you are here, savour the plenty of appetizing local delicacies that
began their journey from this place to the heart of people of India.
- Horses are as much at home in Jodhpur as the local people are as the
city has been a base for equestrian sport for a long time. You can
choose to drift through the desert sand dunes on these horses, most of
which are Marwar breeds.
- Visit the artificial Kalyana Lake, that was constructed by Pratap
Singh in 1872 by destroying the earlier existing structures on the
place. Now it has come up as an excellent picnic spot where you can
indulge yourself no end.
- While we celebrate the majestic Jodhpur, we shouldn't forget the
place that was replaced by Jodhpur as the capital of Marwar. Visit
Mandore, the old capital of the Marwar state, which fascinates you even
now when it has been relegated to the status of ruins. You cannot but be
overwhelmed by the sight of massive memorials, temples and sculptures
and last but not the least, the gardens.
- We advise you to include a game of Polo in your itinerary. Watch the
royal sport in action. It is quite easy to find a match that suits your
tour programme with the games being advertised in local newspapers.
- While we assume that you are going to visit the spectacular Umaid
Bhawan Palace anyway, we'd ask you not to miss the Umaid Garden which
extends up to 82 acres and has a museum and a zoo among other
attractions. Children, especially, are definitely going to love it.
- Travelling 25 km to visit the Bishnoi villages is not a tough task
who believe that every plant and living beings are sacred and they go to
any length to protect these.
